    Kia ora Ken!

Cold corporate coffee, huh? It's not the drinking. It's how it's served.

My daughter, Josephine, worked as a barrista in a prominent coffee bar in the heart of Wellington city for over a year. I worked nearby, and would frequently drop in for a coffee, just to meet up with her and enjoy her comforting service.

    One day she phoned me.

"What's a CV, Dad?", she asked. "It's just that this guy from the ASB Bank spoke to me in the coffee-shop today. He asked if I'd like to work in a bank. When I said, 'yeh, tell me more', he gave me his card and asked me to send him my CV. What's a CV?"

Josephine sent in her CV, once she found out what a CV was. After three selection interviews - and to cut a long story short - she ended up as a teller with the ASB Bank, just across the road from where she had been working as a Barrista.

Josephine made a good cup of coffee. But it tasted all the better when she served it.

She is now travelling the world on what she saved during her three years tellering at the ASB Bank. They want her back. She'll almost certainly have a job waiting for her when she returns to Wellington.

  • Long time no talk, Ken. Good to "hear" your friendly voice around these parts again. I love your analogy, and I think that was overall what I was driving at! Even though the coffee does taste better elsewhere - with an attitude of service, a warm and friendly smile, and a relationship between customer and company representative your offering is so much more palatable.
