Well as far I know, MS sharepoint is a single solution that combines the ability to easily create corporate Web portals with document management, content searching, and team collaboration. You have referred several important business models here. But to me, partner with another company seems the best way!

I am very fond of partnering with companies that are expert in their given craft. Partnerships can be very tricky. That's the entire premise of our business model - outsourced document management (output/input - not EDM). We have adopted a hybrid approach where we offer connectors to various solutions from our hardware, and can do fairly complex configuration and setup of WSS via the GUI. However, when it comes to high end design, we have experts we turn to for that. It makes a world of difference, most certainly.

Another problem with SharePoint is that it is only "half" compatible with FrontPage Extensions. The confusion this causes is, well, can't be understats. SharePoint is something that I wouldn't miss should it disappear of the face of the planet!

Charles, frankly I have no experience or exposure to this product. I did a quick Google search on it, and turned up their corporate website: http://www.ennov.com/. From what I gather in their literature, they focus on Business Process Management (BPM), which SharePoint is actually not terribly strong in. However, my concern is that the first thing I see is some blurb about working with EMC's Documentum, which is a very big software application - powerful but big.

So I have no insight specifically for you. On the note of SharePoint as an EDM, it is not good. We utilize it as an intranet site, which it works very well at - in general. However, we have our own EDM that we use. I think I spell that out fairly clearly in this article, but perhaps since this writing, Microsoft has made no bones about the fact that they are going to be gunning for EDM vendors. The space is going to get very tight, but if you want a lot of informative articles I would suggest looking into AIIM's magazine, Infonomics.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Warmest Regards,
K

I agree completely. I have a specific workflow that hinges on this strategy. My intentions, starting several years back, was to build it as the company portal, then begin phasing in various touch points that engendered the organization to it. With the advent of the new excel services, SaaS modeling, and growing development community, SharePoint is on its way.

I hope that Microsoft would eventually move towards a model of having these enterprise softwares available on all Business Versions of their Operating System and adopt a pay as you use model. Meaning sharepoint could be instantly switched on with minimal configuration.

Why I state that is because if it doesn't move out of the intranet, there's not much value. Sharepoint needs to be able to talk to users within the supply chain or partnering companies needing to have access to marketing information.

Simple analogy would be IBM and it's partners that needs to tap onto their marketing collaterals, technical specifications of their servers.
